They started working at the pub around two years ago when they were running drag queen story time at the establishment.
“One thing I really like about working at Old Nick's is that they took the heat during that period, and they stood strong with the community,” Roberts said. Spectrum hosts theme nights, guest DJs, and live performances, ensuring a diverse and exciting experience for its patrons.
Held annually, it features a parade, live performances, guest speakers, food vendors, and community organizations. The couple has been in business for just over three years together, supporting their mission of creating “a feel good space” in Eugene.

Lake Castagna founded Queer Eugene (QE) three years ago because there weren’t any clear meeting spaces for the queer community in Eugene.
“I would trip over queer people at the grocery store, like there’s so many of us here,” they said.

- Eugene Pride: One of the most significant lgbtq+Q+ events in Eugene is Eugene Pride.
While the measure was subsequently overturned, it was just the beginning of the community's efforts to ensure equal rights and protection for all.
In 1987, Oregon Governor Neil Goldschmidt issued an executive order banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation within state employment. The order was revoked by Ballot Measure 8, which in turn was ruled unconstitutional in 1992.
Starting in 2002, the domestic partner registry was made available in Eugene, while statewide, public employers were required to offer equal benefits for same-sex domestic partners.
In 2015, as equality in marriage was ushered in, the State of Oregon banned conversion therapy targeting youth under the age of 18 years.
“No one should feel like a burden in this space,” Rost said.
The pair has made multiple modifications to their coffee shop to make customers of all types feel comfortable, from removing the beeper from their microwave for neurodivergent patrons to having a sign fingerspelling "open" and "shut" for their deaf or hard-of-hearing customers.
“No matter who you call your partner, or what your faith is, or your abilities, we’re not here to question those, we’re here so you can be who you are,” Feuerborn said.

Feuerborn and Rost moved to Eugene from Portland, where they lived past lives working in natural grocery stores.
They are working with HIV Alliance, Transponder, Eugene Pride and Eugene Performing Arts Center with grant money to put together a queer community center. That’s the way the world should be.”
Nelson's in the Whit
Nelson’s in the Whit is a queer-owned and operated space in Eugene that partners itself with the queer community.
“I think we’re one of three or four queer-owned spaces in Eugene,” general manager TJ Mooney said.
Nelson’s serves Mexican fare and colorful cocktails in an old home located off Blair Boulevard.
But Roberts always felt supported by Old Nick's Pub during the tough period.

Eugene became a popular destination for progressive thought and counterculture in the 1960s and has continued to be an example of inclusion and innovation to this day. Today, the city is home to year-round festivals, events and ongoing activism that make for a vibrant and varied place to live and play.
