3. This is the perfect pick for a cozy-yet-ethereal night in. It's a powerful reflection on wealth disparity, race discrimination, and stigma surrounding the LGBTQ community — a must-see if there's ever been one. Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel lead as a painter and her unwilling subject whose intimate time together begins a secret romance that threatens to unravel them both.

Centered on the drag and ballroom scene of New York City and those communities' roles in rebuffing systemic intersectional bias, this documentary is an inspiring reminder that joy and love can bring about lasting change — but not without profound struggle. Bottoms delivers.

Critics Consensus: Framed by great work from director Sidney Lumet and fueled by a gripping performance from Al Pacino, Dog Day Afternoon offers a finely detailed snapshot of people in crisis with tension-soaked drama shaded in black humor.

The People's Joker (2022)

The most original comic book movie in years just so happens to be a trans coming-of-age story. The film's leads, Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, explore passion and its limitations as Happy Together provides a unique, if not jarring, glimpse into affairs of the heart.

Seeking something unapologetically outrageous? Yes, please! Kiki (2016)

There has never been a better time to revisit Sara Jordenö's breathtaking Kiki. It has just enough real sweetness and heart to bring a tear to your eye without feeling overly sappy. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Writer-director Céline Sciamma will blow you away with this historical French drama.

Oozing with moody visuals, a tense synth-heavy score, and plenty of sex appeal, Rose Glass'Love Lies Bleeding will scratch the itch for anyone craving a lesbian neo-noir that feels like “San Junipero” crossed with a Coen Brothers' thriller. Which means there is space for experimentation and, often, failure for queer and trans cinema where there wasn’t before.

The unique framing gives the film something of an ethereal quality, especially paired with Teo Escamilla's dreamy cinematography that imbues each woman with a glowy, almost goddess-like quality. It’s first and foremost a tender look at a difficult father-daughter relationship, but its perspective is visibly informed by Sophie’s queer identity.
