“I remember a week or so after his arrest, I was standing in the checkout line at a grocery store in Cleveland, where I live. However, what they got were police who simply said, "Don't let Dahmer back in" and "Let us know if you see him." Milwaukeeans, decades old and especially those who are LGBTQIA+, will tell you that letting the police know still would have not prevented harm.
Dahmer, himself, probably needed a world in which gay men were allowed to be their full selves and find like-minded folks to develop safe communities with better habits and decisions. Not Dahmer.

The special also reported that Dahmer’s grandmother kicked him out of her home after she discovered a partially naked man with him in her house.
Though Dahmer hadn’t come out until he was an adult, his attorney claimed in his trial in 1992 that the serial killer had “discovered and accepted his homosexuality” as an adolescent.
I don’t think it lasted more than a couple months, to be honest," says Gunkle.
And in some odd way, Dahmer’s crimes actually led to systemic changes that helped Milwaukee’s LGBTQ community. ″He was scared to death of girls,″ she said. Geirger described Dahmer as polite and courteous but somewhat aloof to The Plain Dealer and claimed that he asked her to be his date because her best friend dated Dahmer’s best friend at the time.

In 1987, when Dahmer began preying on people in Milwaukee, it was the height of the AIDS epidemic.
The book explains how Dahmer, who had an above-average intellect and is described as “conventionally good-looking,” was able to fool everyone around him, including his family, his neighbors and the police, to avoid capture for so many years. They each needed for their loved ones, witnesses, and especially police, detectives, and judges to ask more questions.
In an interview with The Plain Dealerin 1991, a woman named Bridget Geiger claimed she went to prom with Dahmer while they both attended Revere High School in Bath Township, Ohio, in June 1978. Although Takach is careful not to give Dahmer’s crimes all the credit, the nicknames went away in the early 1990s. She also claimed that Dahmer and his friend called for a seance at the party.

Sinthomsophone's brother, like many others targeted by Dahmer, did not need police to keep him safe.
