An Essential Guide to LGBTQ+ Philadelphia
Philadelphia, the nation’s birthplace and one of the most welcoming cities for the LGBTQ+ community, is proud of the historic roles it has played — and plays still — in the founding, advancement and celebration of the LGBTQ+ Civil Rights movement.
In 1965 Philadelphia hosted the country’s first major demonstration for gay rights, the Annual Reminders protests outside Independence Hall.
The Beagle Tavern in Norristown
Beagle Tavern
1003 East Main Street, Norristown
610-272-3133, www.mybeagletavern.com
Norristown’s unassuming, beagle-loving gay bar (it was named after the owner’s pooch Timmy) has great drink specials for happy hour and, on Wednesday nights, drag queens Thunder Showers and Summer Clearance stop by to give out blush-worthy prizes at their Kinky Quizzo event.
Best for: Cheap drinks (go for the Citywide Special), live jazz, and raunchy shows.

Boxers PHL
1330 Walnut Street
215-735-2977, www.facebook.com/boxersphl
The Gayborhood’s newest addition to the gay-bar scene, this New York City chain stands apart by having its bartenders slinging drinks in nothing but red mesh shorts (Inside tip: it’s rumored that most of them don’t wear undies.) There are pool tables upstairs, and a twice-weekly poker night for those looking for a little game-play in the hood.
Best for: Great happy hour prices, unpretentious feel, bartenders in mesh shorts (duh).
iCandy
254 South 12th Street
(267) 324-3500, www.clubicandy.com
This multi-level nightclub is without a doubt the gayest of the gay bars around here. And while there’s still more work ahead for diverse representation in Philly’s nightlife, many bars across the city support and employ LGBTQ+ workers and welcome LGBTQ+ guests.
So whether you’re a dive bar kind of person, want a drink while watching a drag show or have a romantic date night, there’s a bar in Philly for you.
Below, find a guide to just some of Philly’s LGBTQ+-owned, -staffed and -friendly bars throughout Philadelphia.
Best for: cocktails, singing at the piano, catching great performances around said piano, the upstairs dancefloor.
Ubar

Voyeur
1221 Saint James Street
215-735-5772, www.voyeurnightclub.com
The Gayborhood’s only after-hours club bumps with late-night dancing and insane light shows after 2 a.m.
The inside feels like an episode of Mad Men, the cocktails are sophisticated, the ambience stylized, and the patrons a little wise (if you get my meaning). Best for: Brunch and dinner menu, extensive liquor list and after-dinner cocktails.
Stir
1705 Chancellor Street
215-732-2700, www.stirphilly.com
Stir is our Rittenhouse gay embassy located in one of the area’s less-scary alleys.
Men of all sizes and hair levels (usually those of the larger size and fuller hair) frequent this spot with four levels fit for dancing, playing pool, or other unspoken activities. Then in 1979, the first-ever national march for LGBTQ+ Rights was organized at Arch Street Meeting House.
Today, visitors can discover the city’s famous Gayborhood and explore important LGBTQ+ landmarks like Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room (the oldest LGBTQ+ bookstore in the nation) and Tavern on Camac (Philadelphia’s oldest operating LGBTQ+ bar), along with fantastic shopping and dining.
Facilities include steam rooms, private cabins, saunas dark area and even a gym, plus play areas. Best for: Dollar drinks on Thursdays, hot lesbian bartenders.
