I don’t sit around stewing over it or thinking about it at all, but if making nice means making a country record and going back to that, then no, I’m not ready.

Q.Has there been a peace agreement between you and Toby Keith?

A. Joined by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, "Gaslighter" does exactly what Maines couldn't during our interview (a prenup preempts her from doing so): detail her divorce from her husband, actor Adrian Pasdar, of 17 years with scathing lyrical specificity, the kind of wig-snatching realness the queer community devours.

And it feels amazing. We did her first duo ice cream dance (in which they danced with ice cream in their hands). Everyone was putting on these fake smiles, nobody had any anger and they were all just happy to be there. In the past, when I was sick, I was in bed all day and, "Oh, hey, I've never watched 'The Kardashians.' But there's a whole marathon.

I have to think that Faith Hill has answered that question, honestly, and that she’s for gay marriage. Bad move on the lawsuit. If you really want to meet this moment, if you're changing your name for the right reasons or to really have a certain impact or outcome, then you are doing the opposite of that."

And listen, we felt the pressure of, once you've had success, changing your name feels like a huge thing to overcome.

With two kids, there’s not enough time in the day to spend on what I look like; this is a much easier look. (Laughs) I try to not predict the future or project; I just really try to live in the now, so I’m open to it. Shoot. (Laughs)

Q.You’ve always had a really loyal gay fan base, even before you publicly chastised George W. Bush. So if I had a comedy LGBTQ guest list it'd be: Fortune, Wanda Sykes ‚Ķ who else?

They decided to postpone their concerts so that the affected member could prioritize their wellness and get enough time to recover. We had had discussions about changing our name since 2003. But it seemed, just for whatever reason, too big a thing to do, and nobody was calling on us to do it. In the past, she has been with men only – she got married twice – which is evidence that she is straight.

Natalie married her bassist boyfriend Michael Tarabay in 1997, but they got divorced after two years of marriage.

(Laughs) But after the controversy, I feel like there was even more of a connection, and that’s just because we both know how it feels to be hated just for who we are – not for doing anything, bothering anyone, murdering anyone or being arrested. I was very honest about my influences and the kind of music I came from — and country was not it.

Ha!

You consulted different activist groups for the "March March" video, which features images from a Pride parade alongside footage from current Black Lives Matter protests. So there was a lot of self-realization and a lot of things that went on, but yeah, I needed a long while to just … be.

Q.Why was the distinction between this album and your work with the Dixie Chicks important to you?

A.

(Laughs)

Q.About the lack of country artists advocating for equal rights.

A. I love Rachel Maddow. Sure, I’ve got no issues. But I’m sure some do.
